I am a big fan of the Olympics. I cry during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and proudly point out the countries of my ancestry with pride, even though I have been to none of them. I turn on sports that I wouldn't watch unless it was the Olympics. I have it on in the background when I work or workout. When we come home, I eagerly snap on the TV.

Except my kids routinely ask to put on Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Seriously, without fail, I click on the TV for some curling, and the chants of "Wubbzy! Wubbzy!" begin. Thankfully, we can now have both simultaneously.

Sort of.

You see, Wubbzy has put out a new DVD, Wubbzy: Go For Gold.
Since I have already gushed about Wubbzy: A Little Help from my Friends and Wubbzy: Pirate Treasure, the good Wubbzy-folks decided I'd appreciate a copy of Wubbzy: Go for Gold, too!

Of course my kids were absolutely thrilled to receive the DVD. They put it on immediately, and naturally wanted to see it again and again and again. I got a kick out of the WuzzOlympic Opening Ceremonies and appreciated the black & white showing of the "History of the WuzzOlympic Games." Of course I loved the skating character "Michelle Kwanzleberry," especially since I worked at a gymnastics meet with her mother back in December. (Ah yes, that is a story for another time - but suffice to say that supporting youth athletics is a priority for the Kwans .. er, Kwanzleberries.)

The WuzzOlympic Games motto of "Prepare, Practice, and Have Fun!" is applicable to more than just sports. I admit I need to take these simple instructions to heart. As I prepare for the Disney Princess Half-Marathon, I'm touched with a little envy of those who are going to run faster than I am. I'm worried I'll be the slowest of our group. And yet, I've prepared and practiced (and will keep doing so next week) so must simply have fun, and I'll benefit. I will finish the race, even if I am much slower than the others. And I know that I will have accomplished something that would have seemed insurmountable a little less than a year ago when I first began running.

Last night, the USA women's ice-hockey team won the silver medal, but cried because they really wanted gold. One of my sons got angry. He started yelling bad things about the Canadians, who had won gold. Although we were disappointed that the USA "lost" we had to remind ourselves that they won silver, and that an Olympic medal is an enormous accomplishment! I also had to remind my son to be happy for the Canadians, and respect their skills.

The lessons on sharing, taking turns, good sportsmanship, playing fair, and other important social graces are woven into the Wubbzy storylines, as always. I love being able to remind my kids, "Remember when Wubbzy..." to help illustrate a lesson. Last night's ice-hockey discussion was made easier as I was able to remind them how all the characters on the podium at the WuzzOlympic Games were winners, and that even those who weren't on the podium were winners for trying hard.

The Go for Gold DVD also includes music videos and special coloring & activity pages. My sons are hooked.

Fortunately, I have been given the opportunity to give away a copy of Wubbzy: Go For Gold! Simply leave a comment below with your favorite Olympic sport for one entry. Tweet about this contest for an extra entry. Blog about this contest for an extra entry. As always, winners will be determined via random.org and you must leave your email address in order to win (so that we can contact you!)

The Olympics end Sunday night (waaaah!) so my contest will end shortly thereafter. I'll close comments at noon Pacific-time on Monday. That gives us enough time to watch the Closing Ceremony on tape-delay (even though we are in the same time zone as Vancouver!) and cry our tears.

Good luck!

For the Fair, my youngest son did a project on "freezing and melting." He carefully tested different liquids' freezing and melting points (in a non-precise, Kindergarten-way, naturally.) A week from Saturday, we'll watch a show on ice -- and of course, ice-skating is possible because the blade melts the ice as the skater glides across the slick surface. But at that point, all my son will care about will be his favorite "cutey-cuties," glitter, and sparkles.

We had a blast when Mom Central and Feld Entertainment sent us to the Circus. And then my youngest son was completely smitten by Princesses on Ice. (My eldest son thought it was pretty cool, too, but he won't admit it.) And so, we are thrilled that we've now been invited to Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy.

This show includes scenes from Cars (wooo! cars on ice!), Little Mermaid, Lion King, Tinkerbell, and more!

Of course, like with the other shows, I'll report back after I have seen it. But, in the meantime, I have a special offer for YOU, my super-awesome readers:

I had never heard of such a product, nor seen one before. I was thrilled to observe how this individual-cup coffee maker uses "T-disks" instead of ground coffee. I was intrigued that these disks could also contain tea or hot chocolate. I watched in awe as the machine read the bar code on the disk, therefore heating the water to the proper temperature for that particular beverage, and then dispensing the proper amount of water.

I walked away from the demo with a delicious hot chocolate beverage, but also a plan: I would get my husband a Tassimo for a gift!

You see, my husband and I both have an "off and on" relationship. No, not with each other: with coffee.
My husband, in particular, goes on coffee "kicks" where he'll drink a cup or more a day for awhile. He'll see ground coffee that looks attractive to him, and buy it! We'll end up with many bags of ground coffee, but then suddenly he'll decide he's had enough for awhile.

And so, the coffee goes bad.

Sure, I put it in the fridge or the freezer, but realistically it ends up in the garbage.

And then there is that problem where perhaps he forgot to take the filter out of the coffee machine, so next time he gets the urge for java weeks or months down the line, there is a moldy disgusting filter in there. Yuk!

With Tassimo, each serving is individual. The T-disks (shown above) are self-contained units. If we want coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, we simply grab a T-disk, put it in the Tassimo, and press "start." The machine delivers the beverage a couple minutes later. Husband can have coffee, while I can have hot chocolate. If we want to have hot beverages every day, we can do that. But if one of us wants a coffee one morning out of the blue, but doesn't want another for a week, that's fine, too.

The T-disk is super-easy to clean up (just open the Tassimo, take out the disk, and toss!) The Tassimo itself is also very easy to clean, just a swipe around the area where the T-disk lies, and then occasional flushing with fresh tap water. The version I received for review even has a water filter built-in.

Yes, you read that correctly -- I was very lucky and the folks at Tassimo gave me a machine for review. After seeing it at the party, I was ready to purchase it, so I can definitely say that I love this product. It was unexpected and thrilling to find out I could get one free!

As it turns out, Tassimo isn't ridiculously expensive. Models range from $120-199. True, the T-disks are more expensive than purchasing a bag of ground coffee, but for a family like mine where we simply don't use a whole bag of ground coffee in time for it to remain fresh, the T--disks make perfect sense. We picked up large packages of T-disks at Target: easy-peasy. There are many different brands of coffee available in T-disk form, as well as several teas and hot chocolate. I expect more brands will jump on the Tassimo bandwagon as time goes on.

I'm lucky - I live in California, where we haven't had the "snowpocolypse" that the east coast has had. They certainly need their hot beverages! Instead, we've had these nasty patches of stormy weather followed by beautiful sunny days. A few days ago, I craved hot chocolate. Today it is icy-cold lemonade. Thankfully, with Tassimo, I have the flexibility to have a hot beverage when I feel like it, without opening a huge bag of ground coffee or dirtying a full-size coffee machine for a single cup.

Seriously - my husband and I love our Tassimo. We've shown it off to people - like my parents - who are equally as intrigued. Thank you Bosch for giving me a fabulous gift!

Somehow, what started out as a peer-induced challenge ("Let's run a 5K!") turned into an actual hobby. While the summer months were hot at times, the autumn and winter brought the dry skin and chapped lips out in full force. It isn't surprising that I jumped at the chance to try out a different challenge: Neosporin's 3-day Healthy Lips Challenge, thanks to Mom Central. I received two products: Lip Health Overnight Renewal Therapy and Lip Health Daily Hydration Therapy.

To put it bluntly, I didn't need three days. My lips improved overnight on the very first day. The Overnight Renewal Therapy was so soft and moisturizing that on the second day I ended up using it on a couple of my toes and on one cheek that had gotten a bit of a dry patch. Both of these other body parts cleared up immediately. Meanwhile, the Daily Hydration Therapy gave me satisfyingly slick lips with a little gloss. My lips felt great, but also looked great. As a bonus, the Daily Hydration Therapy is SPF 20 to prevent further damage.
Typically moisturizing products take at least a few days to take effect, but the Neosporin Lip Health products had my lips shiny and smooth within that first day.

Last Saturday I participated in a rather grueling trail run. It was simultaneously the most beautiful and the most challenging run I've ever done. By the end, I was covered in mud. I admit that I didn't put the Neosporin Daily Hydration Therapy on before the race, but I should have! By the end of the race, I had torn up my lips. I kept licking them, biting them, and mashing them together as I tried to both ascent and decent various super-muddy, very steep and slippery hills on the course.

My body enjoyed the shower it received post-race, and my lips were super-happy with the Neosporin Overnight Renewal Therapy I put on them that night. By the next morning, nobody could have guessed that I had bitten my lips to shreds the day before. Seriously.

I am definitely more thrilled with the Neosporin products than I thought I'd be. Usually it takes more than a few days to heal my lips, but Neosporin did the trick immediately.

Thank you Mom Central and Neosporin for making my lips feel as triumphant as my body feels after running, without my lips looking like I was just out running!

This is a compensated review by BlogHer and DiGiorno.

As readers of the Karianna Spectrum know, I've been trying to treat my body better. Starting last Spring, I embarked on an exercise program that has taken me literally from the couch to a 5K to several 5Ks, to two (and counting!) 10Ks, to two weeks away from doing a half-marathon. (Eep! Two weeks?!) But all my efforts with exercise would be lost if I stuffed my piehole with... pie. Okay, so I eat pie, but just a slice, not the whole thing.

Jokes aside, portion control is a big deal. We all know the "secret" to losing weight is "eat less, exercise more," but that is easier said than done. Some "experts" recommend using smaller dishes to create the psychological satisfaction of filling up one's plate without truly packing in the calories. The plates that we typically use for a regular meal are several inches bigger than they were in leaner times. (That's "leaner" both financially and physically.) And portion control isn't just about losing weight; it is about maintaining a healthy weight as well.

"Yeah, that's great, Kari," you say, "You can do that plate-trick when making meals at home, but I'm super-duper busy and can't always take the time to cook from scratch." Yeah, I hear you.

Convenience food is typically one of those categories for which portion control is a challenge. Back when "fast food" originated, a hamburger and fries were the size of what is now considered the smallest of meals. Now, such a meal looks puny. Bottled drinks have 2.5 servings-worth of liquid packed inside. And "personalized size" pizza typically has at least three-servings worth of calories.

But not anymore.
I had the pleasure of testing out DiGiorno's new 200-Calorie Portions pizzas thanks to BlogHer Reviews. I received three varieties: Cheese & Tomato, Pepperoni, and Chicken with Peppers & Onions. Each box contains two individually wrapped portions. Each portion is one serving size. That's right, ONE serving size. And like advertised, that one serving size is 200 calories.

The individual serving size is packaged separately from its mate, so opening one single-serving won't affect the freshness of the other. So those of you who have made a three-serving "individual" pizza and then justified eating the other two servings because it is just there and I don't want the rest to go to waste can calm down.

Make a single serving. Eat a single serving. No temptation to eat more.

The pizza can be microwaved or heated in a conventional oven. The serving size is not puny; it is a 7X3.5 inch rectangle of yumminess. The pizza is not a "diet product." I am glad that DiGiorno didn't call it "Diet Pizza" and instead calls it "200 Calorie Portions." It is a practical way to get a single serving, not some sort of experiment in deprivation.

It is fast. It fills my tummy. And it tastes like pizza.

I will buy more to have in my freezer for when I crave pizza. At 200 calories a pop, it is a great way to satisfy. No guilt, no bloat. Just yummy pizza.

They provided me a "media sample" of the Tasty Baker in the hopes that I might have some insight into how their product might benefit those on the autistic spectrum.

I must admit that it took awhile to get my head around the concept that a baking product could also be therapeutic. But, I can see how non-verbal or pre-verbal children (whether autistic or not) might benefit from having cakes or brownies in recognizable shapes, therefore reinforcing the various objects. The fun shapes can also be a way to entice a picky eater to try an unfamiliar food.

Tasty Baker is similar to a waffle-maker, but it can be used for breads, cakes, and brownies (or any other baked good, like muffins) I used it for a variety of different things - vanilla cake, chocolate cake, brownies, and banana bread. I must admit that it takes some trial and error to discover both the right baking time and the correct amount to put in the mold, but let's back up a second to talk about the appeal of the product:
The Tasty Baker has seven shapes in it: a train, a birthday cake, a puppy, a smiley face, a heart, a stack of blocks, and a kitty. When my older son was younger, he was obsessed with trains. I can imagine if we had the Tasty Baker back then, we would have made plates upon plates of trains for his consumption or for birthday parties. He also loves cats and dogs, and thinks the smiley face is cute. Meanwhile, my younger son loves the heart - and of course enjoys the birthday cake because it is fun to pretend you have a birthday even when you don't! The blocks might be a great thing for a younger child or for baby shower snacks.

There are also some other versions with different shapes, such as the Pop Art Disney Princess 5-in-1 Tasty Baker and Pop Art Mickey and Gang 5-in-1 Tasty Baker.

The shapes have wide-appeal and could be used for any children, and even for adults (such as for the aforementioned baby shower) - but since the Tasty Baker folks wanted my slant on their product's use for those with autistic spectrum disorders, here are a few thoughts along those lines:

For someone obsessed with one of these objects, having a muffin, cake, brownie, bread or waffle made in that shape would be a real treat. Many kids on the spectrum do have a particular fixation. Likewise, they are often picky eaters. If the child is uncertain about bananas but loves puppies, a banana-bread puppy might be just the way to introduce the food. Similarly, a zucchini-bread train for someone like my son (who loved trains as a toddler and has adored the color green since birth) would be a fabulous way to sneak in some veggies.

For those working on a more therapeutic level, the "name the shape and then you get the cake!" game would probably work well. (And it need not be a sugary cake - it could be carrot cake, bran muffin, or some other more healthful concoction that still feels like a treat for the child.)

One concern I immediately told the Tasty Baker folks about is that many kids on the spectrum are also on gluten-free diets. Although we haven't done it 100% for our son, we did go through a period of time when we limited gluten/casein. To my delight, the Tasty Baker folks wrote back that they have been testing gluten-free recipes with the baker. Recently one of the folks let me know that they tried the Tasty Baker using gluten free, dairy free and egg free recipes. She told me it performed great and that really any liquid batter will work with the machine. This is indeed good news.

My particular media sample didn't come with recipes and only had vague guidelines about how to cook the batter. Thankfully with trial and error I was able to figure it out - and much to my relief, the non-stick coating is such that during my various "errors" clean up was really easy! As for recipes, the regular version that one purchases in the store has an insert with more specific guidelines; also, Tasty Baker will provide to their customers a free digital recipe book which includes recipes for both the 5-in-1 Tasty Baker and the Pop Art Toaster.

As for practicality, there is good news and bad news.

The good news is that one round of treats takes around 4-6 minutes (the exceptions are with biscuits around a rapid-fire 2 minutes and brownies around 8), which is pretty quick - and certainly faster than baking a whole cake, a bunch of muffins, or an entire loaf of bread. But the bad news is that since only seven little treats cook at a time, it takes quite awhile to make the entire bowl of batter. It takes patience to dole out an entire heaping plate of all seven shapes, and tons more if the child only wants a single shape.

But there is more good news in that the child is usually pretty happy with the first round, so by the time they are nearly done with those, the second round is nearly finished (sort of like when cooking only a couple pancakes or waffles at a time.) Still, I admit being a bit impatient.

One possibly excellent way to use the "quick initial round" to one's advantage would be to save some batter from a sheet cake (or other "bake it all at once" project) and create the little fun shapes with that reserved batter. That way, the Birthday Boy (or otherwise super-eager child) can enjoy little nibbles ahead of time while the larger cake cooks. (There can also be stimulus generalization practice, such as explaining that the little green train is the exact same thing as the large green loaf.)

Another idea is to have more than one Tasty Baker. I can see how combining the "original" with the Mickey and Princesses versions could create quite a fun assortment of shapes, and this would use up the batter quickly!

I'm thankful that the Pop Art Tasty Baker people introduced me to this product. My kids have had fun with it, and I have some ideas for how to use it in creative ways. (Just now I saw on the box that it can cook eggs! Perhaps I'll give that a shot...)

Although my son is old enough (and verbal enough) to not require the reinforcement and "therapy" from this product in a way that might be useful for someone younger or "more affected" on the autism spectrum, I can see how the Tasty Baker could be beneficial. As "regular kids" both my boys have enjoyed the baker, and I expect it would meet with universal approval from other baked-product-loving children.

Thank you Tasty Baker!

At the start of the holiday break, Husband and I went to see a behind-the-scenes presentation of the fabulous musical pictured above. Last night we actually saw the show. I had seen it before, a few years back - and had read the book (Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West ), the sequel (Son of a Witch), and have the fancy collector's book about the musical, "The Grimmerie." It was nice to see it again - and this time bring my husband. He was thrilled it actually had a plot (whereas he says Phantom does not, but he does love Rent) and he is actually interested in reading the book now. Go figure!

I love musical theater. It is just so magical to me, particularly as I remember what a thrill it was to be on a stage while I was a dancer. For awhile Phantom was my favorite. Then Rent. And sure I had that obsession with Cats many years ago, as the rest of the country did. (And yes, my dance company did a version.) But Wicked takes things to a whole new level. (I still have heavy allegiance towards Rent, which is a different animal, and moving in its own way.) I should probably admit that I've read Kristin Chenowith's biography, too, shouldn't I? (A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love, and Faith in Stages)

After it was all over last night, I was really sad. It is such a treat to go to a show like this, and then such a letdown that we must leave all the glitter and song behind to go about our regular lives. It was a fabulous escape!

One such product was Olive Smart Sacks, reusable grocery sacks that hold a lot, but are compact when not in use. I have a lot of reusable bags, so honestly didn't get a chance to use my Olive Smart Sacks until just recently. I had cleaned out my car, so the only thing in the front of the van was the little sack with the three Olive Smart Sacks in it. My other reusable bags were all stuffed in the truck. It was the perfect opportunity to take my new ones for a spin!

When I unwrapped them, they looked a little small. I admit I was concerned that they might not handle my grocery shopping. I considered going back to my car for the larger bags.

When I checked out, the bag boy laughed a little, "Hey, I thought these were pillowcases!" he exclaimed, noting the texture of the fabric, before making a joke that people could actually use pillowcases for their groceries if they wanted, "Maybe just cut some holes out?" he said, before revising, "Or just grab 'em from the top!"

Indeed, the Olive Smart Sacks are very silky and comfortable. The material feels thin, because it can bunch back up into a small place, but is sturdy while remaining soft-to-the-touch. And to my amazement, the three "small" sacks that I brought held a LOT of groceries! (Olive Smart also has a pack of six bags, which of course would bag up twice as much.)

I'm really happy with my trial run of the Olive Smart Sacks. They are certainly more attractive and more compact than the rather stiff variety I have stuffed in my trunk.

What really intrigues me though, is that the company has the "Olive Smart Fundraising Program," an affiliate program for schools and non-profits. Olive Smart will contribute 20% of all sales that your organization sends to their website. I frankly can't stand the various types of fundraising we've had for our school and gym, it is usually stuff that I don't want to purchase but feel like I have to to support the school (or to earn prizes for the kids.) But these reusable bags are practical and stylish enough to actually make sense as a fundraising product. (To learn more, email info@olivesmart.com with the subject line "affiliate program.")

I'm glad I tried out the Olive Smart Sacks -- they'll definitely come in handy time and time again.

--

Disclaimer: Olive Smart Sacks gave the attendees of the SV Moms Holiday Party a three-pack ("Half-Sack") of their silky bags. We were under no obligation to post about them and I will receive no compensation by posting twice (once in the general party write-up and once above.)

When I was in Kindergarten, I was put on the Feingold Program, a diet that eliminated artificial flavors and artificial colors, as well as other food additives that can cause behavioral problems in sensitive children. One of the first substitutions my parents made was to get rid of that brightly colored, highly flavored toothpaste that most kids use. Instead, they gave me Tom's of Maine natural toothpaste. Cinnamint became my favorite flavor.

When my son went on the Feingold Program, I was surprised and happy to see that Tom's of Maine had expanded its line to include more flavors and types than those selections available when I was young. (They even have natural mouthwash that doesn't taste like some of those other all-natural products out there.) I was especially excited when BlogHer contacted me recently to ask if my kids might want to try Silly Strawberry Children's Toothpaste.

Silly Strawberry. The name makes me think of kids' toothpaste, definitely. It makes me think of bright red color and artificial flavor. It makes me think of something that kids would think was great, but might not be great for them. But since it comes from Tom's of Maine, I know that it is NOT bright red. It is NOT artificial. Tom's of Maine's Silly Strawberry toothbrush uses calcium and silica to strengthen and polish teeth.Tom's has made a toothpaste that sounds kid-like, but without those crazy things that usually attract kids.

But what matters is what the kids think:

Silly, indeed.

Thanks Tom's of Maine and BlogHer - I am glad there is a dye-free, naturally-flavored option out there for kids that has personality to match theirs! Tom's wants to make sure you know: Only one natural oral care company carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance for a children's toothpaste, Tom's of Maine Anticavity Children's Silly Strawberry with Fluoride. And because we care as much as you do, we've never tested it on animals or added artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. It's flavored with natural oils for a great strawberry taste they'll love.

Now, a chance for YOU to get a little silly with a $100 VISA gift card! Yes, I have one to give away, as do the other BlogHer Reviewers who sampled Silly Strawberry. I am an online shopper. I get nervous in "real stores" and yet I know that to find the best fit, it is important to go to an actual store. After all, sizes vary store to store, and it is much easier to come up with an alternative in the bricks and mortar store. Although online shopping sites have become pretty good at suggesting various "looks" based on the items a shopper views, nothing beats the real thing.

Still, I have had lots of negative experiences in stores where I've either felt pressured by a salesperson or completely ignored because I don't have the right "look" to pull off a particular brand. And so, I purchase things from the comfort of my own home.

As you readers know, I've recently done more by way of exercise. As a result, my body has changed and I am more confident in how I look. Meanwhile, since I work for home and shuttle the boys around in the afternoon, I have amassed a wide collection of rather boring casual clothing (I'm afraid to call it what it is - "the mom uniform") rather than anything even a bit more dressy, trendy, or flattering. It was therefore very easy for me to enthusiastically jump up and down when BlogHer asked me to participate in a LOFT party.

I knew I'd have to step out of my comfort zone to set foot in an actual store with actual employees looking at how I look in their clothes. But, I figured they would have to be nice to me, and I really wanted to learn about what I should be wearing.
My excitement turned to fear when I learned we would have to complete a "design challenge." Fortunately, I had an amazing stylist at my disposal. Of course "stylist" makes one picture celebrities and other people of means. As she talked about the various "pulls" I kept flashing to my guilty pleasure shows like Stylista and Styl'd. I certainly never thought I'd be the one having a stylist "pulling" things for me.

Below are the three looks Haley the Fabulous created for me. The photographs are courtesy of the amazing Robert Schroeder. I felt a little funny having him follow me around because I'm usually the one behind the lens, but he was terrific and made me feel great.

Outfit 1: "Look Pretty At Every Party"

When Haley asked me my sizes, I automatically thought "Large." Turns out this sweater dress fits me in a "Small." YES, a SMALL. I've never worn a sweater dress for fear of the whole "boob and back sway" issue, but this style was exceptionally flattering on me. And it is a SMALL. Amazing. The necklace was something I wouldn't have selected on my own, but it definitely adds something great.

Outfit 2: "Perfect Desk-To-Dinner Look"

I usually sit at my desk in my running tights or sweatpants and knew that look wouldn't fly at a dinner party. Again Haley hit a homerun by layering this cool stone-emblazoned T-shirt with a belted cardigan. I love how the cardigan creates a "V" both at my chest and waist area. I wouldn't have thought to pair the T with the cardigan in this way, and certainly wouldn't have thought about a T-shirt with such a nice skirt. The skirt turned out to be too large (it is pinned back in the photo) but I ordered a smaller size to be delivered later. The texture of the skirt is really pretty. I know I'll wear it with other tops too. I really love the mix of the various textures for this particular look.

Outfit 3: "Have A Perfectly Casual Holiday"

I loved the jacket the instant I saw it. The lining is my favorite color and I love the striping. I can hear my mom saying "Don't wear blazers, they'll look too masculine on you!" but Haley paired it with a ruffled blouse. Abracadabra! These feminine elements balance the jacket well. Also, since the jacket is cut in a flattering way, it doesn't look boxy or shapeless. Typically I wear boot-cut jeans, but Haley had me try these skinny jeans. SKINNY?!? Yes, indeed. And they ended up looking and feeling good. Ann Taylor LOFT had a wide variety of different denim styles and washes; I was surprised. Typically I think of denim as a super-casual element, but in this context it became "dressy casual."

Overall, I was blown away. I felt amazing and bought all three of these looks. LOFT gave me a $200 gift certificate to participate in this promotion, but I took out my own credit card to make up the difference. Each outfit was a little more than $100 apiece including accessories, which is affordable, especially considering that these elements can be worn with other pieces. We could have easily mixed and matched these pieces with others to create even more outfits for just a little extra money.

I admit when I received the Star Treatment, I figured that LOFT must have pulled out all the stops just for those of us who are bloggers. After all, they'd want to impress us so we'd give them good press. But I noticed that there were a lot of people on the floor, many shoppers with a LOFT employee by their side. The employees were happily putting clothes in dressing rooms, getting the correct sizes out of the back room, or suggesting other products that might work with what the shopper was looking at. Essentially, the random shopper off the street ended up with their own attentive LOFT employee to help them pull together their holiday looks. Fabulous!

The store manager explained that LOFT employees don't work on commission. That means their sunny smiles and excellent expertise comes from wanting to help the customer, not trying to earn a high commission on an expensive item that might not really fit or flatter the customer. It has been several days since my LOFT experience and I don't have any sort of buyer's remorse as I have in the past from pushy saleswomen. The happy feeling I got at the store has continued as I brought my purchases home.

Will I return to LOFT? Absolutely. I know now that their clothes do fit me, and that I can look chic even if I'm not one of those size-0 gals who know how to do their makeup better than I do. Thank you to BlogHer for providing this opportunity, and for LOFT for treating me like a rock star while giving me a $200 gift card so I could really benefit from the style consultation.

I am only an "expert" on what I've been using, but wanted to give a "shout out" to the things that have been helping me on my runs during the past six months.

Six months. Wow. I can't believe it. Yes, on June 9th, I ran for, like, thirty seconds, and my lungs burned. Today, on December 8th, my lungs burned a little bit with cold, but I ran for far longer than I did that day. I did the BlogHer 5K, then an "official" 5K at Disney, another 5K local race, a 10K local race, a 5K trail race, and I'll be doing a 10K this Saturday. I'm signed up for a New Year's 5K and then two half-marathons in February and March, respectively.

So no, I am not an expert, but I've come a long way in six months.

The first few races I did in shoes made for walking. I had received them for a Ryka review back in September 2007 when my exercise was walking. Sure, they were fabulous shoes at the time, especially since they were specifically designed for walking -- but two years later any shoe is going to be inadequate for a newly-minted runner. I went to a real running store to get fitted for running-specific shoes. I ended up with New Balance 1011s. It really is a personal choice - I know people who are thrilled with many other brands.
While at the running store, I picked up some Balega running socks. They are really comfortable, thin, and don't bunch up in any way. I love 'em. (And they don't stink!) I haven't tried out any calf-length compression socks yet, but am intrigued. The ones I have are just ankle-length.

On top I have a sports bra (mine is the Enell) and then I have a variety of shirts. I had two criss-cross tank tops from a Dick's Sporting Goods review I did. At the time, I used these Reebok Performance Essentials tanks for yoga and the 30 Day Shred, but soon learned that they are fabulous for running because there is a little internal pocket that fits my Blackberry perfectly.

I've also used the Nike jacket I received from the same review, plus a UV Skinz jacket that I purchased over the summer. I have two long-sleeved UV Skinz shirts that I wear frequently, too, because they are thin but provide that important UV coverage. Now that it is getting chilly, I'm putting the thin jackets over my shirts, and am looking around for some sort of appropriate cold-weather running solution. (UV Skinz is having a holiday sale - 20% off with code HOLIDAY09 through New Years!)

On the bottom I have two go-to brands: lululemon pants (a capri type and a running-tights type) and Running Skirts. Both these brands use hidden pockets liberally, which is important for stashing my various items. I must admit that I made a poor choice during my 10K though, because I kept an unwrapped chew in a front pocket that ended up pretty sweaty - ick! But aside from my stupidity, the pockets are well placed for easy-access!

For things I don't need instantly while I'm running but need to have (car keys, hotel room key, credit cards, cash) I rely on my shoe pouch from RoadID. I had learned about RoadID through the Shredheads. I purchased a wrist band, too. Essentially, this means that if I collapse, get hit by a car, slide on ice and pass out, or otherwise become too ill to give anyone any useful information, my RoadID will talk for me. As a bonus, for every $20 you spend during the holiday season on www.RoadID.com through December 25th you'll receive an entry to win either a Human Touch massage chair or an Orbea bike. Plus, if you become a RoadID customer, they will frequently send you exclusive coupon codes to get discounts on their gear.

Now that it is getting really cold, I got myself a Nike fleece running cap. I like it - and it is warm - but my problem is that I have really thick hair. It comes with a little ponytail hole, but my hair doesn't come close to fitting in it. So for now, I have the "ponytail bump" which then makes the hat ride up too far. When I get some free time (ha!) I'll cut the ponytail holder a little bigger and try to reinforce the edges so it doesn't completely rip the back of the hat.

Speaking of Nike, I got a Nike+ sportband. I don't wear Nike shoes, so purchased a Switcheasy RunAway to hold the sensor. Admittedly, the sportsband required a learning curve for me because I had actually turned the sensor off, amongst other things, but once I figured it out, I was good to go. The first couple runs were off, but then I completed a successful calibration run and I think it is pretty accurate. At the least, I have an exact time for my run, and I usually already know (from marked pavement) what the distance is. I have a couple GPS programs for my phone, so if I wanted to be super-accurate I could run those at the same time so that the distance is precise. I love how the sportband tracks how I speed up and slow down during different points. Although I use DailyMile to keep track of (and tweet about) my runs, the nike+ also keeps track of my runs online so that I can have a record of them.

Aaaaaand... that's about it. I expect that I'll find some other running gadgets if I keep this up, but for now, the above is what I use!

      They arrived!

My holiday cards arrived*. Of course, I still need to write out the address labels and actually send them, but having beautiful cards (with matching address labels) ready to rock makes me feel much better.

As it turns out, my cards arrived last week, but with the whole chin-splitting accident excitement, I didn't open the box. The turn-around time from order to design-approval to on-your-front-porch is really rapid at Minted; it certainly isn't too late to order holiday photo cards that appear as though you spent multiple revisions with a design crew and tons of time to obtain - but really are done in just a few days.

Last year I used Minted and reviewed them. I was impressed with Minted then, and so they graciously gave me a discount code for you readers earlier this year, and then offered to provide me 25 free flat-cards this holiday if I would mention them again.

By way of disclaimer, I ordered more than 25, and also ordered the matching address labels. In other words, I trusted Minted enough to pony up my own money to send these gorgeous cards to more than just 25 recipients.

Ready to see what my card looks like?

This scan doesn't do the card justice. The paper is textured, so the image is clear in person even if it looks bumpy above. I also got some photo stamps to match, as well as the matching address labels from Minted to complete the package.

Just like last year, it was difficult for me to decide which of the excellent designs would make the perfect holiday card. We lucked out during a wedding reception a couple weeks ago and got a photo of us all together (in which we don't look completely lame) with a background that could match many of the designs. My final choice was pretty easy because while I wanted a family shot, I also wished to show my boys' personality a bit. The shots of them together tend to be much cuter than the whole family, naturally!

Both shots were taken outside, so there were some shadows. In the family shot I was leaning awkwardly into my kids. But it was super simple to crop the photos appropriately to fit within the design to my liking. Similarly, I played around with the wording of our family name. I kept the suggested holiday message, but then switched around the other text.

When I was satisfied with what I saw on the preview screen, I held my breath and pressed the "order" key. I knew a professional designer would review the card prior to printing, so I didn't have to hold my breath too much.

A couple days later, I received an email with a link to view and approve my proof. This was slightly different than last year. Last year, I received an email with the proof attached. I then responded via email to let them know whether I approved. This year, the process was easier. The email contained a link to the proof along with a series of check-boxes to indicate whether things were correct on each piece of my order. Everything was great, so I checked the "approved" boxes for both the card and address labels.

Just a couple days later, the package was on my doorstep. I paid for a rush delivery since I wanted to report back to you readers, and rush they did!

Like last year, the cards were packed in a way to ensure safe delivery. Last year, the packing material was a nest of brown raffia-like twigs. This year, bubble wrap. I must admit I was surprised by the bubble wrap because the seemingly environmentally-friendly paper raffia-twigs of last year felt like a better choice. (I turned around and used the bubble wrap to mail a package of gifts to relatives.) Just as last year, there was a little sticker with a person's name saying he had packed up our order for us - I love this personal touch.

I'm happy with the cards. They are thick and well-made. There were certainly many other Minted designs I considered and probably would have been thrilled with those as well.

Disclaimers: Minted gave me 25 cards in exchange for posting about them. As it turns out, one of their competitors - tiny*prints - also gave me incentive to post, which I will do in a separate entry. It is no secret that I have spent my own money at both Minted and Tiny*Prints and it is definitely not my intention to pit them against each other; rather, I wish to explain how much I love both and hope that you readers will check them out to see what fits for you.

*If you receive a physical holiday card from me, it might be his one, or it might be the tiny*prints one that I'll review in a separate entry.

Any USPS letter carrier that is wearing an official uniform or shows their union card identification can visit participating Dunkin' Donuts restaurants throughout the country for a free coffee, any size. No additional purchase is necessary.

Hooray!

Earlier in the season, Dunkin' Donuts generously gave me coupons to try out some of their new fall flavors. Alas, we don't have any Dunkin' Donuts in our area, so I planned to take the coupons with me back east when I visited my college alma mater.

But I forgot.

When I saw that familiar pink and orange sign, my heart sank. First, because it was closed. (Really, why must airports close down so early? Those of us who got up early on the West coast end up arriving very hungry on the East coast!) And second, because I remembered those coupons at home.

Well, just now (yes, I got up at 4am today for no good reason. It is now 5am and I hope to go back to bed for a little bit...) I received an email from Dunkin' Donuts about their new Peppermint Mocha Lattes (sounds DELISH!) AND to announce that small lattes will be only $1.99 this season. PLUS, they have "Latte Lites" at only 70 calories for a 10 oz serving. You LOVE my ALL-CAPS? (Really, I need to get back to bed or pep myself up with some coffee... )

In sum:

If you are a USPS worker, get thee to a Dunkin' Donuts for your free coffee today!

If you are anyone who has a Dunkin' Donuts nearby, get thee there to try the $1.99 latte. Please pick up either a pumpkin one or this new Peppermint Mocha one for me in spirit. Really, they sound so good, and yet I'd need to take an airplane to get one...

--
Disclaimer: Dunkin Donuts sends me packages of coupons from time to time. They send me sprinkles and drink cozies. They like me and like I them. But I post because I want to post, not because I have any obligation to post. No money exchanges hands (unless I actually went to a DD and purchased something delicious to eat, but that has nothing to do with blogging.) Really, they send me press releases and I sometimes post 'em - that's just how simple it is.

I was the "team photographer" and had lovingly created Blurb books of each player. I really wanted to see the families' reactions to my books, as well as to enjoy a slide show of the team. Plus, I welcomed a chance to socialize instead of just scurrying away post-game to another commitment.

But Jill Asher told me that the Silicon Valley Moms Holiday Party - sponsored by Chevy - was a not-to-miss event. Fellow SV Moms told me it would be worth it to skip the soccer party.

And oh yes, it was worth it.

Now, I'd like to think I'm not a completely greedy person, but let's just say my calm approach to the event turned into a surprised excitement along with that ooooh, I wonder if I can get me some of that.

And there was a lot of that to be had:
First off, there were some new Chevys awaiting our perusal, including a Camaro. Chevy was the major sponsor of our event, plus provided us with carabiners (what a great idea!) and a Tiffany keychain (with "GM" monogrammed on it, natch!)

I admit I've never owned a Chevy - but I thank them for their generosity in sponsoring the gathering. The car I drove to the event was a Prius. One of the merchants at the party laughed, saying, "You drive a Prius - so you have to love our product!" Indeed, I love his product. It is actually the brainchild of his wife -- Olive Smart Sacks, reusable grocery sacks that hold a lot, but are compact when not in use. I won't take a picture of my trunk because it is embarrassing, but there are a bazillion of those stiff reusable bags all over the place. Olive Smart Sacks include six big bags stuffed into one small sack. That one sack is compact enough to just sit in a cupholder or in a purse until needed at the grocery store. Now until December 15th, enter code SVMOM at checkout and all shipping charges will be eliminated. They suggest giving Olive Smart Sacks as gifts -- but I can see them being used as the gift wrapper too.

The company also has the "Olive Smart Fundraising Program," an affiliate program for schools and non-profits. Olive Smart will contribute 20% of all sales that your organization sends to their website. Wow, that is smart. (To learn more, email info@olivesmart.com with the subject line "affiliate program.")

After I spoke to the Olive Smart folks, I noticed the Wicked display. To say I was excited was an understatement. It is my favorite musical (I read all of Gregory McGuire's books including Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West before even seeing the musical -- then read the sequel Son of a Witch. Of course I also own The Grimmerie, a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Hit Broadway Musical.) So yeah, I was just a tad tickled to see a representative from Wicked there, and beyond thrilled to find out that each attendee would receive two tickets to see the musical. Then to top it off, I won entry to Behind the Emerald Curtain, an opportunity to see the costumes up close and ask questions of the two hosting cast members. WOOOOooooooo!

Other tables thrilled me with their coolness-factor as well:

The Cinemin Swivel is a pocket-sized device that projects movies anywhere using the same DLP® technology commonly found in high-definition TVs. How many times have you wished you could watch a movie on your ceiling? Seriously, I'm into that concept. You can pick up a Cinemin Swivel at Amazon, or enter the Cinemin Twitter Giveaway and perhaps win one. I will be receiving a Cinemin Swivel - SO EXCITED! - and will report back once I have had an opportunity to test it out.

Bosch was at the party with a Tassimo. I had never heard of Tassimo before, but was intrigued when I saw the demonstration. It is a hot-beverage maker that has little individualized pouches of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. The machine can even make single-served lattes. The machine reads the barcode on the little packet to determine the amount of water, temperature of water, and brewing-time length -- amazing!

I tested out the hot chocolate, and indeed it was delicious. No joke - I went to the Tassimo website the day after the party to do some research on it. I figure it would make a fabulous holiday present for my husband. See, he gets in these "gotta have coffee!" moods and purchases a lot of coffee. But then he ends up too busy to brew a pot, and the grounds go stale. With Tassimo this wouldn't be a problem, because the little packets are sealed until use. He can go crazy with coffee for a week, but then not return for a month and all will be well. The one-touch operation of the machine means there isn't a whole procedure for making that pot of coffee. Bonus - there is very little to clean up afterward. So - I look forward to having a Tassimo in our house. As luck would have it, I've been granted the opportunity to review one. I'll definitely report back.

No tech-happy party would be a party without HP. A representative from Hewlett-Packard showed us a new wireless combo scanner-copier-printer - the Photosmart Premium All-in-One. I am all in favor of getting rid of wires, and definitely love the ability to print directly from the web without the computer. I'd love to have a scanner that I didn't have to continually plug into my computer. When I saw the Photosmart Premium All-in-One at the party, I assumed it was out of my price range. After all, it looks high-end -- well made, sophisticated, and hosts plenty of functions. Surprise! It is only $149.99.

Another cool-thing that I saw demonstrated at the SV Moms Party was the Astak Mole Wireless IP Camera. For those who have businesses they wish to watch after-hours, or who are away from their homes (or vacation homes) and wish to have a high-tech security system, the Mole provides monitoring (available on one's computer and also on one's cellphone) with the option of motion detection alerts. It seems like an amazing system.

And then there is Jabra. It would take a book to explain the ups and downs I've had regarding wireless earpieces. Since California has a hands-free law, I have resorted to using speakerphone if I end up getting a call while driving. Fortunately, one of the goodies in our party swag bag was a Jabra Cruiser Bluetooth Wireless Speakerphone. Unlike the little speakerphone in my mobile, the Jabra is designed to minimize background noise while enhancing voice. I haven't yet set it up, but am eager to do so.

And then there were the vendors who had the high cuteness level:

Wati Clothing for Girls has been an SV Moms Favorite for awhile now. A dress I received from Wati two years and gifted to my cousin turned out to be her official "back to school" outfit for the second grade - That is quite an honor! I have boys, so Wati Grossman provided me a beautiful velvet vest that worked perfectly as I dressed my reluctant Pilgrim for his in-class Thanksgiving Feast. (My younger son will probably wear it on Christmas, but it fit the older's agenda for today.) Wati dresses really are worth a look if you have girls - they are unique and beautiful.

Zooni had a display of adorable handmade hats, mittens, and animal socks. I received a confetti mop-top hat made with green, aqua and cobalt blue. It is fleece-lined and oh-so-soft. I kept coming back to the Zooni table to stroke the products - they really are super-soft and absolutely gorgeous. I wish they came in adult sizes. No joke.

Giddy Giddy gave me an adorable aqua and cobalt blue handmade hairclip. (Oh, how I wish I had girls!) Other products from Giddy Giddy include hair elastics and pouches - with cute designs like flowers, cupcakes, ladybugs, and birds. Back in my day we just had those fake tortoise-shell plastic barrettes. A lot has changed since then!

When I looked into my gift bag I was stunned to see a beautiful brown and pink piece from Lucky Jade. At first glance it looked like a sweater, but it turned out to be a cashmere cotton coverall. Alas, it is too small for my boys, but I donated it to my local Girl Scout troop's latest project - they are collecting items for a women's shelter and particularly need baby clothes. I can imagine how thrilled the new owner of the coverall will be - it is super-soft and absolutely gorgeous. Although it feels like it would be too delicate to wash, it is in fact machine-washable. Lucky Jade also has a bamboo + cotton collection that is machine washable -- easy and eco-friendly, I love it!

Also a bit too small for my kids, but exceptionally useful to the Girl Scouts' drive was a pair of sunglasses from Teeny Tiny Optics. All too often, people neglect the young 'uns when considering sun protection. Although the pair I received at the party was too small, Teeny Tiny Optics has boutique-style 100% UV-protection sunglasses all the way up through teen sizes, so is worth a look no matter your kids' ages.

In addition to the beautiful Lucky Jade coverall and Teeny Tiny Optics sunglasses, I also gave the Girl Scouts a diaper cake from Sweetpea Cakes, a company that SV Moms introduced me to a couple years ago.

Speaking of charity, CoffeeMate is donating $50,000 to Dress for Success - and will up their donation with your participation. Simply visit CoffeeMate to send an encouraging note to a Dress for Success client, and they will make an additional donation of 50 cents. Not only will you personalize the Dress for Success experience for one of their clients, but you'll help CoffeeMate increase their donation level.

Not surprisingly, many products at the SV Moms party were for moms. (But HUGE KUDOS to all the folks who brought tech-stuff and gadgets - showing us you know that we can be interested in more than just "baby stuff.") But, if you are done having kids, check out the Essure Permanent Birth Control Procedure. I'm one of those gals who is super-sensitive to hormones, so don't like the Pill (which isn't permanent anyway) but also wouldn't want something more permanent that included hormones. Essure does not involve hormones. Many permanent birth control solutions are invasive - but the Essure procedure does not involve cutting or risks associated with tubal ligation. It can be performed in a physician's office under local anesthesia in about 10 minutes. Essure cannot be reversed.

And no SV Moms Party is complete without a presence from Nintendo. They profiled both Wii Fit Plus (which I own and love!) and Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box for DS, which was a game I had been eying. I am sure my kids will solve Professor Layton's puzzles much more readily than I will, but we'll see...

Also included in the swag bag I received were first aid products from Tender Corp - wonderful to have at home and in the car, but of course we hope we never have to use survival kits. (Thank you for reminding us to be prepared!) I also received a couple kids' DVDs - Curious George's A Very Monkey Christmas and Intro to Andyland from performer Andy Z. I am sure my kids will enjoy watching both of these. Curious George's holiday special premieres Wednesday November 25th on PBS Kids - check your local listings.

I also got a chance to see the Litl webbook, which is an internet computer that doubles as a digital picture frame. For people who just want web-based content (think your aging parents who don't want to fool with "extras") this is a great solution. And I also got to see some of the new things that tiny*prints has been cooking up. I mentioned tiny*prints two years ago -- although I'll be reviewing Minted this year, I think I might end up ordering some tiny*prints cards as well - it could be a fun comparison - stay tuned.

All in all, the SV Moms Holiday Party was more fantastic than my wildest dreams. I picked up some very useful products and information. Rest assured the ripples from this experience will continue, be it future reviews with these companies, or the knowledge that a Dress for Success client received personal notes from you readers - and that a baby at my local women's shelter has a new Lucky Jade cashmere cotton coverall and Teeny Tiny Optics sunglasses.

Thank you to all the sponsors and representatives who attended the party. I appreciate the attention you gave us, and am flattered by your generosity. Thank you to Jill, Linsey, Tekla, and the other SV Moms who made the party possible with their hard work. It is fantastic to be part of such an amazing group.

Disclaimer: As noted above, I received a lot of excellent products at the party. These were given to me FREE. Although there was a hope that I would blog about the products, there was no obligation to do so. In many cases, I'll mention these products again -- after all, some I just received, so haven't had the opportunity to really "try out." For example, the Cinemin sounds cool, but since I haven't tried it yet, I can't say for sure if it is as excellent a product as I think it is. Ditto on the Jabra In-Car Speakerphone. And while I tried a cup of hot chocolate made from Tassimo, actually using the machine on a regular basis will give me a better idea of the product's usefulness and quality. And so, for those products I'll report back a bit later. I should also note that in cases where I've linked to an Amazon product I have used my affiliate code, which means I'd get a couple cents if you - my dear reader - were to purchase products on the Amazon website.

It is no surprise that I'll be ordering from them again this year. Because they know I love them, they are giving me 25 free cards in exchange for mentioning them again this year. Once I receive my cards (I'll be ponying up my own dough to have more than 25) I'll check back in here to let you know if they are as excellent as last year's. But in the meantime, I wanted to give a heads-up to you folks who still believe it is back-to-school:

Did you know October is gone? Halloween is gone? Next week is the last week before Thanksgiving of all things!? Yup - that's right - you NEED to think about your holiday cards now!
I've bought some new sweaters for the boys and hope to wrangle the family this weekend or early next week in anticipation of that perfect card. I already have many designs saved in my "favorites" on the Minted website.

Last year I mentioned how I was really attracted to the "yearline" design, and thought I might be able to modify it to be a "family-line" such that instead of four dates, it would be a little mini-essay on each of my four family members. (In fact, Minted is advertising it as such now -- that it can be either a timeline or a highlight for each family member.) Well, the yearline cards are back again this year, and are currently on sale!

This year they have adorable minibook cards as well, for those who want to spectacularly update the "holiday letter" by creating a book. Shhhh, don't tell, but I've already got a narcissistic book theme going with my gifts this year so this particular style might be overkill for me, but would be perfect for most other years.

Minted doesn't just stop at holiday cards. They have birth announcements, birthday party invites, and other fun paper products. Consider that personal stationery might make a fabulous holiday gift. Or, if you are throwing a swanky New Year's bash or winter soiree, you'll need some fabulous holiday party invitations.

As a heads-up, MommyTracked.com is currently holding a giveaway for free Minted cards. Also, Minted is frequently advertising various promotions - be it for a specific type of card or for free shipping. If you check back on their site, I'm sure you will find something to fit your needs.

I'll check back once I decide on my cards and receive them in the mail - thanks Minted!

Disclaimer: As stated at the start of this post, Minted is giving me 25 free cards in exchange for blogging about them. I will then pay for the rest of the cards. These are admittedly expensive cards, so it speaks highly of Minted that I would select to order the rest of my cards from them as well (as opposed to taking the 25 free ones, then ordering from a cheaper company for the rest.) I feel it is worth my money because of the quality, the uniqueness of the designs, and the personal attention that I remember from last year. Throughout the year I've received discounts from Minted that come to their loyal customers, independent of me being a blogger.
