Chugging Along with Chugginton's Traintastic Cargo Game

chuggington_traintastic_cargo_board_game.jpgLast winter I had the pleasure of receiving and reviewing some games from The Wonder Forge. I was thrilled that they approached me again this spring to check out their newest offering for preschool train aficionados: Chugginton's Traintastic Cargo Game.

Trains are a hot commodity for the toddler and preschool set. Back when my boys were small, I spent many hours in various train museums and at model train displays. We rode trains, we built trains, and we talked trains.

As every educator knows, making a topic relevant to someone makes it easier to learn. And so, a board game focusing on colors, shapes, numbers, memory, and trains is destined to be a hit with those girls and boys who proudly run around yelling "choo-choo!" and begging to ride their favorite local train again and again.

Even though my boys are now school-aged, so certainly know their colors, numbers and shapes, the Traintastic Cargo Game still caught their attention. They love board games and adore memory games. They like to play the "adult instructor" role when game-playing, so I expect they'll eagerly bring it out when they visit their younger cousins.

Sure, my boys and many kids these days have plenty of electronic games to keep them occupied, but I love seeing kids excited over a traditional board game where the sounds we hear while playing are the "chugga-chugga"s from our own throats, or actual live conversation. Chugginton's Traintastic Cargo Game has plenty of opportunity for creative and collaborative play in addition to its educational component.

Lucky you, the Wonder Forge has agreed to give away a copy of this fun and educational board game to one of you readers!

Hmmm... This is harder to answer than I expected. Claire would play board games with us for hours every day if she could. Particular favorites right now are Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders. We also have some games that we borrow from OT. Right now we have one with chopsticks and tiny plastic food, Wok 'n Roll, to practice fine motor skills. Technically, she doesn't own any electronic games, in that we've never bought her a Leapster or DS. She once had a toy laptop that she could draw on that she wore out. However, she's learned to play Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Battleship, and various logic puzzles on our phones, iPod, and laptop. I think she finds the extreme predictability soothing. Also, she can play by herself, which is practical in a family with two kids. I'd love to say, "Oh no, very little screen time for us!" But there are a lot of hours in a day to fill, and Claire seeks a lot of stimulation. AND board games aren't compatible with baby brothers who put everything in their mouths!

Melissa:

Unfortunately, the children in my home play way more electronic games than board games. However, we are making a conscious effort to start playing more board games that include everyone. I have one in particular that is obsessed with trains including Chuggington.

Brennan, of course, is a little young for board or electronic games, but I can see the fascination with all things mechanical already. He's figured out how to swipe the touch screen on my phone to scroll through photo albums!

Now, Kari, are we limited to one comment/day? I just assumed, though I forgot to come leave a comment yesterday. I'm not sure if some of the above comment-leavers were intending to enter the drawing or just making conversation. I've got a Chuggington-lover, and would really be ticked to lose to "XXX Videos"! ;-)

Erica:

My son doesn't play games. He isn't quite old enough, but this would be awesome for the daycare I am opening in my home. Electronic games have become so popular but I think board games are important hands on for children!

tina reynolds:

We play both about even mine are still young they play games on the ipad some but we also play a lot of matching, candy land and crazy 8s eaglesforjack@gmail.com

Nina:

My kids are still pretty young, but I definitely love traditional board games and non-electronic toys best! This seems like a really great game!

Tina S.:

My children play a little of each, but I would say more board! Some of there favorites are Yahtzee and Monopoly!
