This is a compensated review by BlogHer and Loft.
I am an online shopper. I get nervous in "real stores" and yet I know that to find the best fit, it is important to go to an actual store. After all, sizes vary store to store, and it is much easier to come up with an alternative in the bricks and mortar store. Although online shopping sites have become pretty good at suggesting various "looks" based on the items a shopper views, nothing beats the real thing.
Still, I have had lots of negative experiences in stores where I've either felt pressured by a salesperson or completely ignored because I don't have the right "look" to pull off a particular brand. And so, I purchase things from the comfort of my own home.
As you readers know, I've recently done more by way of exercise. As a result, my body has changed and I am more confident in how I look. Meanwhile, since I work for home and shuttle the boys around in the afternoon, I have amassed a wide collection of rather boring casual clothing (I'm afraid to call it what it is - "the mom uniform") rather than anything even a bit more dressy, trendy, or flattering. It was therefore very easy for me to enthusiastically jump up and down when BlogHer asked me to participate in a LOFT party.
I knew I'd have to step out of my comfort zone to set foot in an actual store with actual employees looking at how I look in their clothes. But, I figured they would have to be nice to me, and I really wanted to learn about what I should be wearing.
My excitement turned to fear when I learned we would have to complete a "design challenge." Fortunately, I had an amazing stylist at my disposal. Of course "stylist" makes one picture celebrities and other people of means. As she talked about the various "pulls" I kept flashing to my guilty pleasure shows like Stylista and Styl'd. I certainly never thought I'd be the one having a stylist "pulling" things for me.
Below are the three looks Haley the Fabulous created for me. The photographs are courtesy of the amazing Robert Schroeder. I felt a little funny having him follow me around because I'm usually the one behind the lens, but he was terrific and made me feel great.
Outfit 1: "Look Pretty At Every Party"
When Haley asked me my sizes, I automatically thought "Large." Turns out this sweater dress fits me in a "Small." YES, a SMALL. I've never worn a sweater dress for fear of the whole "boob and back sway" issue, but this style was exceptionally flattering on me. And it is a SMALL. Amazing. The necklace was something I wouldn't have selected on my own, but it definitely adds something great.
Outfit 2: "Perfect Desk-To-Dinner Look"
I usually sit at my desk in my running tights or sweatpants and knew that look wouldn't fly at a dinner party. Again Haley hit a homerun by layering this cool stone-emblazoned T-shirt with a belted cardigan. I love how the cardigan creates a "V" both at my chest and waist area. I wouldn't have thought to pair the T with the cardigan in this way, and certainly wouldn't have thought about a T-shirt with such a nice skirt. The skirt turned out to be too large (it is pinned back in the photo) but I ordered a smaller size to be delivered later. The texture of the skirt is really pretty. I know I'll wear it with other tops too. I really love the mix of the various textures for this particular look.
Outfit 3: "Have A Perfectly Casual Holiday"
I loved the jacket the instant I saw it. The lining is my favorite color and I love the striping. I can hear my mom saying "Don't wear blazers, they'll look too masculine on you!" but Haley paired it with a ruffled blouse. Abracadabra! These feminine elements balance the jacket well. Also, since the jacket is cut in a flattering way, it doesn't look boxy or shapeless. Typically I wear boot-cut jeans, but Haley had me try these skinny jeans. SKINNY?!? Yes, indeed. And they ended up looking and feeling good. Ann Taylor LOFT had a wide variety of different denim styles and washes; I was surprised. Typically I think of denim as a super-casual element, but in this context it became "dressy casual."
Overall, I was blown away. I felt amazing and bought all three of these looks. LOFT gave me a $200 gift certificate to participate in this promotion, but I took out my own credit card to make up the difference. Each outfit was a little more than $100 apiece including accessories, which is affordable, especially considering that these elements can be worn with other pieces. We could have easily mixed and matched these pieces with others to create even more outfits for just a little extra money.
I admit when I received the Star Treatment, I figured that LOFT must have pulled out all the stops just for those of us who are bloggers. After all, they'd want to impress us so we'd give them good press. But I noticed that there were a lot of people on the floor, many shoppers with a LOFT employee by their side. The employees were happily putting clothes in dressing rooms, getting the correct sizes out of the back room, or suggesting other products that might work with what the shopper was looking at. Essentially, the random shopper off the street ended up with their own attentive LOFT employee to help them pull together their holiday looks. Fabulous!
The store manager explained that LOFT employees don't work on commission. That means their sunny smiles and excellent expertise comes from wanting to help the customer, not trying to earn a high commission on an expensive item that might not really fit or flatter the customer. It has been several days since my LOFT experience and I don't have any sort of buyer's remorse as I have in the past from pushy saleswomen. The happy feeling I got at the store has continued as I brought my purchases home.
Will I return to LOFT? Absolutely. I know now that their clothes do fit me, and that I can look chic even if I'm not one of those size-0 gals who know how to do their makeup better than I do. Totally torn between 1 and 3, I just love the way that necklace looks on you, it compliments the dress so well. But I think my love for how powerfully feminine you look in the jacket wins. You pull off the skinny jean very well.

I like the desk-to-dinner look best, though you look great in all three outfits. Also, I ADORE the necklace from Outfit #1 - beautiful. What a fun way to spend an afternoon!

The grey jacket, definitely! It looks a little Chanel - a little classic - very chic and you can make is casual or formal! I'm headed down to see if they have a skirt or pants to match!
