This is a compensated review by BlogHer and Tom's of Maine.
When I was in Kindergarten, I was put on the Feingold Program, a diet that eliminated artificial flavors and artificial colors, as well as other food additives that can cause behavioral problems in sensitive children. One of the first substitutions my parents made was to get rid of that brightly colored, highly flavored toothpaste that most kids use. Instead, they gave me Tom's of Maine natural toothpaste. Cinnamint became my favorite flavor.
When my son went on the Feingold Program, I was surprised and happy to see that Tom's of Maine had expanded its line to include more flavors and types than those selections available when I was young. (They even have natural mouthwash that doesn't taste like some of those other all-natural products out there.) I was especially excited when BlogHer contacted me recently to ask if my kids might want to try Silly Strawberry Children's Toothpaste.
Silly Strawberry. The name makes me think of kids' toothpaste, definitely. It makes me think of bright red color and artificial flavor. It makes me think of something that kids would think was great, but might not be great for them. But since it comes from Tom's of Maine, I know that it is NOT bright red. It is NOT artificial. Tom's of Maine's Silly Strawberry toothbrush uses calcium and silica to strengthen and polish teeth.Tom's has made a toothpaste that sounds kid-like, but without those crazy things that usually attract kids.
But what matters is what the kids think:
Silly, indeed.
Thanks Tom's of Maine and BlogHer - I am glad there is a dye-free, naturally-flavored option out there for kids that has personality to match theirs! Tom's wants to make sure you know: Only one natural oral care company carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance for a children's toothpaste, Tom's of Maine Anticavity Children's Silly Strawberry with Fluoride. And because we care as much as you do, we've never tested it on animals or added artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. It's flavored with natural oils for a great strawberry taste they'll love.
Now, a chance for YOU to get a little silly with a $100 VISA gift card! Yes, I have one to give away, as do the other BlogHer Reviewers who sampled Silly Strawberry. Please check out the BlogHer.com special offers page for more chances to win. (And be sure to check out Tom's of Maine official site.

My kids enjoy brushing their teeth, so there's no real coaxing involved. I think they enjoy their character toothbrushes (Spongebob and "Cars"). They're not crazy about flossing, though.

When my daughter was small we made bedtime a ritual that she & I did together, including brushing teeth. Each time she received a new toothbrush I wrapped it up like a present, and she couldn't wait to use it.
I wish I'd known that Tom's had children's toothpaste when she was little!

mine is a funny story...my non-american friend calls "listerine" "lysol" mistakenly...our little guy always corrects her and yells "eww! that's the poison!" So we always tease him by saying, "What's better than Lysol? Using your toothbrush!" He runs off, happy to show us the right tool :)

This is a little on the horrible side, but I tell my son that if he does not brush his teeth "the bugs" will get into his mouth (bugs meaning plaque, but bugs seems to have a better impact). Since there has been some commercials on TV showing the plaque bugs crawling around in some persons mouth, that has reinforced things. Whatever anyone may think, my son has excellent teeth brushing routine and beautiful teeth.

i have always told my kids that if they didn't brush and floss their teeth they would fall out or rot. then they would have to go to the dentist to get them fixed. however, i think my neighbor had a big inpact on my youngest son. his teeth and gums were so horribly covered with yellow tarter, it was disgusting. my son doesn't want his teeth to be like that.

My kids are pretty good about it now (although my 3 yr old still has a habit of biting on the brush when I'm trying to do her back teeth) but when we were going through the difficult phases, we used to play games, like "Oh, is that Elmo back there? Let's tickle him!" and then in Elmo's voice as we brushed, "oh, that tickles (giggle giggle)" and then Elmo would jump out. Then we'd do other voices until we were done... Oh, and the Count would count the kids' teeth. :-)

Brushing has not been an issue for my 4 year old since I got him a power spinner toothbrush with Wall-E on it. It has a timer and he will brush without complaint for the entire 2 minutes.

I'd do what my mom did. She would tell us that there were "sugar bugs" and that we needed to brush our teeth to get rid of them. This motivated me and my mom never had a problem getting me to brush my teeth and I never had a cavity.

Not having any children of my own. My friend has those toothbrushes that play a song, and when the song is done, then you can stop brushing your teeth, basically teaching you how long to brush.

would you believe my secret weapon is food coloring?
I have them open their mouths and add a drop or two of food coloring under the tongue. Tell them to swish it around their mouth and spit it out. Rinse with water. Ask them to smile while looking into the mirror
Now brush! I have them brush until all of the color is gone. Brush the tongue too. Carefully inspect your child's teeth for any remaining color. If there is still color, then this is a place that wasn't thoroughly brushed. Just re-brush that spot.

Good tips here! My tricks wax and wane for DuckyBoy. Right now what's working is the As-Seen-On-TV toothbrush dispenser that Grandma got him for Christmas. He still does a terrible job brushing though, and hates it when I remind him to do his top teeth. Anybody got tips for sensitive top gums?? :) Toms of Maine Strawberry sounds great though, we'll try that too!

Kids learn from watching their parent, I brush my teeth 3 or more times a day, they learned young with a good tasting ADA toothpaste, but they learned to always spit it out and when they are done, brush your tongue! So, maybe I got lucky, but they both have excellent teeth!

Brushing begins early
My kids are teens now so they brush on their own But---- you have to start young.
When my kids were young as soon as their teeth came in I got tiny toothbrushes with the soft bristles and started brushing their teeth over time as they grew it was a natural habit to brush. I also need rewards for their brushing, they got flavored toothpaste, floss and mouthwash.
Their are some many ways to make brushing their teeth fun like musical brushing, turn on music tell them they have to brush to the music when music stops they stop, spit brush again
Imagination is the key to any child's success as they love to imagine and love to play games
