(If you want to see this show - head on over to my other post for a Disney on Ice coupon code!)
Last night our family went to see Disney on Ice: Princess Classics. I knew my youngest would have a blast -- he's totally into sparkles, pink, purple, aqua, and pretty princesses. But I expected my oldest would roll his eyes the whole time. Surprisingly, he got into it - the Cat loved the more physical comedy portions whereas Splig loved the more sappy, glide-y, sparkle-y parts. Meanwhile, I felt nostalgic and realized that while I own many Disney movies, most are on VHS - curses!
The show catered to a great mix of ages. The little kids were scared a bit during some of the sections, but there were no hugely frightening parts. The audience really got into the spirit, such as screaming at Snow White not to bite the poisoned apple. And of course they swooned and clapped at the various "true love's kiss" moments.
Not surprisingly, the sets and costumes were amazing. From glow-in-the-dark effects for The Little Mermaid to shooting fire out of the castle during the finale, there were plenty of "Oooohs" and "Ahhhs." I particularly loved the closing scene, as all characters were dressed in beautiful sparkley ivory-white wedding attire (yes, I know I'm a sap.)
Before the show, I tested out a tiny tiara comb (pictured above right) but once we got to the arena I bought a larger light-up tiara. It is super-awesome.
Meanwhile, Spliggle was happy with his purchase of an Ariel necklace, and the Cat rocked out with his dragon-eating light-up sword. Spliggle got an extra bonus at the end, as the snow-cone vendor continued to sell his precious colored-water post-show. Poor Splig had been begging me for one during the show, but I had no cash so couldn't just grab one from a roving vendor. (Yes, I brought cash, but the parking was a whopping $20.) After the show, the credit-card-enabled snow-cone stand was happy to take my plastic in exchange for a different sort of plastic: a Cinderella-mug which Splig will sleep with once the grape-goo is finally finished.
I enjoyed connecting with (fellow Shredhead and Tiarathon participant) Laura of Adventures in Juggling, whose beautiful teenage daughters proved that it isn't necessary to be a little kid to enjoy Disney Princesses. They had fun flirting with the cotton candy guys, and I must admit the handsome princes selling their wares about the venue were quite dashing indeed. I think the Prince Charming costumes were a great touch.
Since I didn't want to risk the arena folks confiscating my large camera, I brought the Cat's tiny one - therefore, the quality of the pictures aren't great, but by grabbing all the possible light, I can see how the Cat's impression of the show went from "aw, mom, do I have to?" to rapt attention (compare pics 3 and 4, below):
After the show, we hung out at the arena a little bit so Splig could finish his snow-cone and the Cat could practice his dragon-slaying swordplay:

I really had a blast - thank you to Feld and Mom Central, who gave us tickets to see the opening night performance in exchange for spreading the word about the show and the coupon code MOM**.
