This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Ragu
--
When I learned that the BlogHer Reviewers would be trying out some Ragu sauces, I laughed because I had just bought several Ragu sauces to have in my pantry for those OMG-what-is-for-dinner emergencies.
Which is every day.
In fact, the three recipes I tried specifically for BlogHer Reviews I made on nights that I otherwise would have dialed the pizza parlor or gone through a drive-thru. Every. Single. Day. was one that I felt I had absolutely no time to create anything, and yet I did because I wanted to complete an honest review.
And honestly, I'm impressed.
The three recipes I tried were Hearty Baked Rigatoni (with Ragu Old World Style Sweet Tomato Basil,) Chicken Parmesan Alfredo (with Ragu Alfredo,) and Double-Topped Mushroom Pizza (with Ragu Pizza sauce.) All three were fast. All three were healthful. And all three were tasty.
The time versus health equation is a tough one. I can honestly say that the Ragu recipes I tried were easy, delicious, and much more healthful than fast-food fare. The great thing about these meals is that they can incorporate fresh ingredients. (And hey, if you are going to the store to pick up frozen waffles, you can grab some vegetables.)
For the Chicken Parmesan Alfredo, I used fresh tomatoes and newly-grated Parmesan. For the Double-Topped Mushroom Pizza I used green onions and portabella mushrooms. The calamata olives I used were in a tub from the deli and I selected these rather than the traditional black canned olives. The official pizza recipe on the Ragu website calls for canned mushrooms, but I decided I wanted to try fresh (and they were fabulous!) Most of the recipes can be altered to use canned ingredients for convenience, but I liked the idea of using the sauce as the convenience item, but then adding fresh ingredients. Even chopping fresh ingredients, the prep time was less than 10-15 minutes per recipe (just slightly over the time it took for the oven to preheat.) I was truly shocked at how easily and quickly these meals came together.
The taste was surprisingly terrific. I have visions of those over-cooked, soft, old-people-home food when I think of "easy meals." But the Chicken Parmesan Alfredo produced a moist, soft chicken with lots of flavor, and the Hearty Baked Rigatoni was so great I went back for seconds. My son and husband raved about both. My son said I could make the Chicken Parmesan Alfredo every day. "This is so, so delicious!" he told me. My husband was shocked that these recipes tasted as though I had made everything from scratch, "Wow, this is actually very good!" he remarked.
The Double-Topped Mushroom Pizza was admittedly a hard sell, but I knew that going in, because I selected a mushroom dish knowing that I'm the only one in the family who enjoys them. I liked the pizza, but I think I put a little too much sauce on it, and I've got to find a better pizza crust. We've always had trouble with homemade pizza because the crust does us in, whether it is premade or made from scratch. Every time it tastes "off" and that was the case here. The Ragu sauce itself tasted great and very much like what one would expect from a pizza joint; but, I definitely over-sauced the pizza, because it was the main ingredient I tasted.
I am pleasantly surprised by the results of the three Ragu recipes I made. Although I originally thought I'd just be pouring Ragu sauce over pasta, it turns out there are many quick meals that use the sauces in ways I wouldn't have anticipated. I will revisit these recipes and will likely try more.
I am thrilled to report that thanks to Ragu, I have a $100 VISA card to award to a lucky winner who blogs about or leaves a comment below on one of two topics:

Disclaimer: As stated earlier, this is a compensated review from BlogHer and Ragu. Although the Ragu people saw my entry prior to me posting it publicly, they did not edit it in any way. The opinions stated are my own, and reflect those of my family members. I chose to do this review because I was already a Ragu fan, so expected to give a positive report. I'm always on the lookout for easy ways to make healthful meals, and was honestly surprised at just how versatile the Ragu sauces are -- so I wanted to share with my readers - and provide them the opportunity for the contest as well!

Biggest thing I do to feed my kids well: cook mostly from scratch. And to balance the time/health issue, I make a lot of things ahead of time, so that I can just re-heat or throw something in the oven at dinner time.

I feed my husband well on busy night by making sure we have things for quick meals on hand. I freeze cooked chicken breasts that we can easily re-heat with veggies and some starch, or chop up and use on quesadillas (mine are like mexican salads, as one friend once stated). Healthy, quick, and absolutely delicious!

I make sure I have a least these items in case of emergencies.

1) How do you feed your kids well in the midst of the hustle and bustle?
Prepare ahead. One night a week is fast food night. I do a lot of cooking on the weekends to try and prepare for the week. Quick favorites are also a dinner saver

I want to try the chicken alfredo, I make a great one from scratch but it's SO bad calorie wise, and I try to avoid having cream in the fridge. I haven't tried a jarred cream sauce yet and I think I have to put it on my shopping list!

I have always searched for quick dinners with seasonal items, over the years I have a fairly good supply. The Margherita pasta dish looks like one the whole family would enjoy.

I love to feed my kids lots of fruits and veggies. When we are in a hurry or need a quick meal, we always have salad fixings in the fridge including deli meats for a satisfying and healthy meal. I also like to put pork chops and veggies in the crock pot or make chili to simmer all day so when we finally get home, we have a meal all ready for us. The Unstuffed Peppers recipe on the Ragu site looks really delicious! Thanks so much for such a wonderful giveaway!

1. By having everyone take a part in the outcome, with everyone having 'ownership' for part of the meal, everyone is more concerned about the outcome and then everyone really wants to sit down and eat together.
2. The upside pizza looks like fun

I think the CHICKEN MARGHERITA recipe sounds good. My secret for getting dinner ready in the midst of a busy schedule is my 16 year old. She makes dinner a couple nights a week, while I carpool her siblings around.

I try to cut back on fried foods by using my crock pot more often. In fact, the other day I used Ragu with some chicken. I just dumped it all in the crockpot on my way out the door to work. Came home and dinner was ready. After cooking all day, the chicken was SO tender and the sauce had really soaked in nicely. Yum!
