That Crazy Hair!

Yesterday I got my hair done. Beforehand, I went to my eyebrow appointment. (I swear, I don't usually frolic from one beauty treatment to another, but it worked out this way yesterday.) Because I was going to the salon, I left my hair down. Usually it is constrained into a ponytail.

rrd.jpgThe gal who does my brows exclaimed, "Wow Kari! I've never seen your hair, so..." and she searched for the word, settling on "long and, just, well, long."

She meant "big." She meant "frizzy." She meant "uber-thick."

And sure enough, she followed up with a bunch of "Oh, you must feel so blessed to have such thick hair" while in the same breath telling me how it must be so difficult for me not to look like Rosanne Roseannadanna.

Because, in that moment I know I looked exactly like a crazy frizzy mushroom head.

But at least I had the excuse that I was about to go off to the salon.

The conversation continued, since the eyebrow lady wanted to know exactly WHO in the area could possibly make my mop presentable.

Sigh.

This week's Life Well Lived: Looking Your Best series of questions is: "Do you have a favorite blogger or YouTube channel for hair tutorials? Do you create your own? What's your best tip for finding the best tips?"

I bet you can guess my answer, at least in part. But first I'd encourage you to read Maegan Tintari's How To: Find That Perfect Hairstyle. She gives tons of great advice on how to search for tutorials that might help you achieve your ideal look. So... my answer is that I hadn't even thought to try YouTube to instruct me on how better to style my hair. Typically I'm happy to wear it down after the professional has flat-ironed it. My confidence is hugely buoyed because I feel like a "normal" stylish woman! But after I've showered, I resort to ponytails and buns. (I saw a woman on the cover of a magazine with a super-thick braid down her back and I thought "Ew! That's not stylish!" and then realized that woman was me. So... no braids anymore.)

In the past, everyone's "how-to" type things (at the dance studio, in the locker room) didn't quite work on me. My hair was simply too big. I'd go to a professional to ask for a French Braid, and she'd have to keep adding hair all the way down my back to keep everything evenly proportioned (so I ended up having a web-look rather than the sleek look the other girls had.)

So, my natural reaction to the concept of "hair tutorials" is that I won't be able to participate.

But, given this set of questions, I decided I should specifically try searching for "thick hair." After all, with a whole web of experience out there, someone has to have advice that would fit! Of course, my traditional stand-bys come up: how to do waves, curls, messy buns, and other styles that honestly look pretty much the same - lots of bulk, not so much of the "elegant" looks that some of the gals with thinner hair can pull off.

(I was excited just now to land on a fancy braid tutorial that included the words "thick hair," but unfortunately the gal says "Well, since my friend has such thick hair, I'm only going to use half of it to demonstrate so that you can see what a nice, clean braid looks like." Then next to that video is a photo of a gal with a very fat braid. And "fat" is not an adjective I'd like associated with me, even if it is just my hair.)

Don't worry - I'm not all "woe is me." I can create bombshell hair like nobody's business when that look is called for. (Hello, 80's, please come back so I can shine!) But I just can't do some of that delicate stuff that might be more imaginative than what I'm used to. And I know that I am lucky to have abundant hair: it could all be gone if I ever have to go through chemo. But... I'm being frank in that I feel that my style options are limited.

Of course, I could see this as an opportunity: perhaps I could become a thick-hair YouTube sensation! Of course, I'd have to get some ideas first. Head on over to Maegan Tintari's How To: Find That Perfect Hairstyle to see if she can help you out, even if I can't... yet

I have super thick hair too and found this works best:

A Cut with layers. It helps to thin it out and give it body.

HOT ROLLERS! They work best to get rid of the frizz. Only the big rollers (I think my are 2in.)

And I can show you how to french braid your hair so it looks awesome. When my hair was longer, the french braid was a go-to style for me (that always got lots of compliments).

Pat:

Nice to meet you! I also did this Life Well Lived post! I also have thick wavy hair and wish the 80's hairstyle would come back as I loved "the shag" style :)
