I'm one of those folks who get grand ideas about cooking and then end up eating out. I'll make myself an omelet for breakfast, but with my "in the kitchen" karma spent, that means I won't be able to whip up dinner later that day. Or, I'll purchase all the ingredients for a fabulous feast only to get an unexpected work assignment, so the produce withers in the fridge while I punch in my online pizza order. Convenience foods definitely play a role in my household, but of course I'd prefer to grab something healthful than something that offers no nutritional value.
Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day, but it is meant to be consumed during the most hectic portion of my routine. I'm definitely not a morning person, so I wish I could just attach an IV of pick-me-up juice to my arm before I even get out of bed. Feeding the kids while also getting something in my belly can be a challenge, especially since I'm more concerned about making sure everyone has finished homework in their backpacks and shoes on their feet than whether we've eaten.
Meanwhile, my favorite nurse practitioner keeps telling me I need more fiber in my diet. From feeling fuller faster so we don't overeat to keeping us "regular," fiber is definitely an important addition to our eating habits. It was with this in mind that I agreed to try Kellogg's FiberPlus Antioxidants cereal. The "antioxidants" part was indeed a "plus" for me, but it was the "fiber" that really attracted me to this review.
I first tried "Berry Yogurt Crunch," which has a pleasant subtle taste and a crunchy texture. It wasn't overly sweet as similar "berry" cereals can be, nor did it leave a slimy, shiny "sugar sheen" that often comes with flavored cereal. The recommended serving size is one cup, which is much more generous than the average breakfast cereal. One cup will provide 40% of daily fiber as well as an impressive host of other vitamins and nutrients. This larger-than-average serving size is only 170 calories. I was disappointed to see quite a few artificial colors in this cereal. I don't consider it necessary to bump up what is naturally there. Overall I liked "Berry Yogurt Crunch" and found it to be satisfying.
My son was eager to try "Cinnamon Oat Crunch," since he's a big fan of cinnamon in all forms. We have a large box of that other type of popular cinnamon cereal, but he grabbed for the Kellogg FiberPlus Antioxidants box to try it out. Of course I wanted a bowl too. I loved it, and so did he. I appreciate that like the "Berry Yogurt Crunch," the taste is not overwhelmingly sweet. It is also not a super-heavy texture or taste that one might suppose when thinking of the word "fiber." Surprisingly, it was a "light" cereal, and yet filling in its own way. It is a great balance of enjoyable to eat while not being hard on the tummy nor leaving one hungry. The recommended serving size of "Cinnamon Oat Crunch" is ¾ cup for 35% of the suggested daily fiber intake and 110 calories. Although there is some artificial flavor in this variety, there are no artificial colors.
Although I enjoy cereal, it usually packs quite a caloric punch, and often I'm uncertain as to whether I'm really getting any nutritional value. I was definitely pleased to see that Kellogg's FiberPlus Antioxidants cereals have more realistic serving sizes than a lot of other cereals, and I'm especially glad this can be accomplished at under 200 calories (especially since I literally "splash" my cereal with milk rather than drowning it.) Increased fiber than average and the "plus" of antioxidants are definitely intriguing features. I'm glad my son enjoyed the "Cinnamon Oat Crunch" since it is a much healthier alternative than the other cinnamon cereal he's been accustomed to eating. I expect we'll be putting bags of "Cinnamon Oat Crunch" in some baggies to take to the pool. After all, cereal can make a great on-the-go snack, too, which is more healthful than a bag of greasy potato chips or a vending machine candy bar.
Thank you to Kellogg's for giving me the opportunity to try their FiberPlus Antioxidants cereal!
