Multiplication for First Graders

Spilg danced around the kitchen, "I know times!"

Husband and I laughed.

"88 times 88 is seven-seven-forty-four!" he squealed as he spun around.

Husband immediately got a piece of paper to do the calculation. But I had a feeling I knew where Splig's intel came from, so wasn't nearly as impressed.

"And nine times nine is thirty-six!" Splig grinned. Husband's face softened from shock to a bit of relief.

Uh.... nope!

The Cat has been trying to teach his little brother multiplication. But it seems only some of the facts have stuck. That said, if we do some of the smaller numbers, he can actually rationalize it out. But for the larger numbers he pretty much tries to rely on memory, not reason.
