A Small Kindness can be Big

10th_birthday_cake.gifThe Cat's birthday was last week, but his party isn't for another week. After all, holding a birthday party on a holiday weekend is asking for nobody to show up. Unfortunately, it is also basketball season, so even our date far away from January and February's long weekends initially began as a bust.

My son's face fell with every "no" RSVP that came in. Along with their messages of "Have a Happy Birthday!" the words "basketball game!" showed up quite a lot on the evite. The declination messages were kind, but filled with excuses for other commitments.

But then yesterday, one of the prior "no" RSVPs turned into a "yes." The mother wrote, "We'd like to change our RSVP. Basketball games are every weekend. A 10th birthday party is only once in a lifetime."

Of course the Cat was ecstatic when I told him. And then the next two RSVPs that came in last night and this morning are "yes."

I wonder if either of those two would have been a "no" had it not been for the other mom's comment?

Regardless, we're en route to having a happy birthday party indeed.

Truth in advertising: I've let Splig skip choir practice in exchange for a birthday party, and I think he might have skipped soccer for a party - but gymnastics meets are still a huge priority (there are only a handful of them and they are expensive,) so I've had him RSVP "no" for a party because of gymnastics. (But, in that case the birthday boy already had 10+ kids coming to his party. Still, if I'm honest, gymnastics pretty much comes first. So, I'm not perfect.)

That's awesome! So glad one mom quickly realized that a birthday party is special while a basketball game is a common event.

Aww, that is sweet! I've struggled with the same problem because J. has skating lessons in the middle of the afternoon on Sundays - prime party time.

Sigh- b-day protocol. I hate the b-day rat race! Kindness is way under rated though isn't it?
