Small Sacrifices

peanut_butter_heart.gifA long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... well, okay, it was in NYC, I traded my smooth peanut butter in for crunchy.

It wasn't a choice I made with much thought. After all, I was used to grubbing out on soda and pizza during those free grad-school lectures. And free is good when you're in grad school. I also took advantage of New York City's fabulous delivery options. I'd get Chinese food, sushi, and even cheeseburgers just by using the now defunct food.com website. In other words, it was rare that I'd actually need to purchase peanut butter. After all, "peanut butter chicken" was something I clicked with my mouse fifteen minutes before a nice man brought it to my doorstep (before slipping menus under everyone's door in my apartment building.) It didn't involve me owning peanut butter.

But then I started to date a man. And we ended up engaged. And he ended up moving in with me as we prepared for our wedding.

And HE liked crunchy peanut butter.

Not just "crunchy," actually, but super, mega-duperly, extra-crunchy. (I think he goes for extra-pulpy orange juice too, but really I'll never know for certain because he's a Soda Man.)

I sort of shrugged my shoulders. I figured that while I prefer smooth, I wouldn't be harmed by extra-crunchy peanut butter. And how often do I actually make myself peanut butter toast, anyway?

And so the years went on. And we introduced our sons to peanut butter - but only the extra-crunchy type, since that is what we've always bought.

Well, this summer I ended up "inheriting" some smooth peanut butter. You see, during the eat.blog.run relay, our team purchased various provisions. At the end of our adventure, plenty of food items remained, and non-local people didn't want to tempt the TSA by hauling around half-eaten stuff.

So I got to stock my kitchen!

And I became reacquainted with smooth peanut butter. Nice... soft... silky... smooth peanut butter.

It occurred to me that it had been about a decade since I had purchased smooth peanut butter.

It also occurred to me that I really love smooth peanut butter.

And... there is no reason that our household must be a single-type peanut butter zone.

Plus, as it turns out, one of my sons actually prefers smooth.

So there you have it - it is not necessary to sacrifice your preferred peanut butter. It is possible to live in harmony. You are welcome for this obvious revelation.

Jeff:

Our pantry has two jars of PB for exactly this reason -- my wife prefers hers with rocks in it, I prefer smooth.

Kirsten:

You made me giggle... thanks!
