Since When Did BlogHer Preparation Involve Critters?

Twas the night before I leave for BlogHer, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring... Actually, there WAS something stirring.

But let me back up.

mouse.gifEarlier today, I returned to a computer store to tell them they had neglected to charge me for my brand! spanking! new! memory card. I was gonna be cool with my huge storage capacity for photographs. Oh, yeahhhhh. Unfortunately, the cashier's boss was walking by and audibly "harrumphed" when I told him of his mistake, so the dude started stuttering and turning red, insisting this was the very first time he's ever forgotten to charge a customer. (Or, those customers aren't as stupid as I am to come back to open their wallets again.) I felt bad for the guy, but I couldn't have just stolen the card.

So jump forward a few hours and I'm fumbling with the new card. It won't work. I start to put my old card back in, but it breaks. Now I'm completely without a memory card. Great. I'm kneeling on the ground, trying to sort out my camera bag, hoping to find a working card. And my cat starts growling in a very odd way. The living room curtain mere feet away from me shakes.

And out runs a RAT. Not a little mouse. Not a shrew. Not a tiny rat. A BIG RAT.

All of a sudden, instead of memory card woes and important things like packing for my early-morning flight tomorrow, (and oh yeah, trying to get various client work done) I'm thrust into RAT CHASING MODE.

I'll spare you the play-by-play, but after destroying half our living room by moving various objects both to create a barricade and to "smoke" out the rat (yes, a light-up bubble machine can have its off-label uses) we successfully "escorted" the rat outside using a hockey stick and a thick piece of poster-board.

We are the Champions...

Thankfully, I learned that although the memory card I purchased today might be too sophisticated for my camera (I'll have to talk to them there Nikon folk when I go to their shindig about this) it is prefect for my little video camera. Hooray! Plus I discovered my stash. No, not that type of stash... my memory card stash. And it even included an extra camera battery and some lens wipes! (Okay, I know you are all bored here, but this is a huge victory for me after Rodney the Rat and all.)

So yeah. All you have to do to completely freak me out at BlogHer is say, "OMG, a RAT!" (Or, "I stole all your memory cards!")

Eek! you are a brave soul. You'll be in charge of critters at blogher. See you in a thursday, woohoo! Is it wrong I signed up for the improving your photography panel but I'm bringing neither camera (excet iPhone) nor laptop with photoshop? testing out netbook now.

Jim:

Did you upgrade your Nikon? I'm rapidly slamming up against the limits of 2004 technology myself... Sadly, I needed a lighting rig more than I needed a large LCD. Of course, if my stupid Eye-Fi card worked correctly, that wouldn't be an issue, but that's a longer story...

As someone who sadly left her pet rats in her family's care while at BlogHer, I am grateful for your humane treatment. Cheers
