Yesterday was about perspective - it was fun to watch how instead of being a bit frightened of the fireworks like in years past, my kids were much more interested in how the fireworks were created. They sat upright so they could see the person lighting the rockets in the distance. Of course some were on timers, but amongst the orange glow on the ground, there was the unmistakable silhouette of a man.
"I want to be a Fireworks Man when I grow up," Splig remarked as I prayed for the future of his fingers, and he scarfed down bag after bag of popcorn. Of course, it is unlikely he'll be a pyrotechnics professional, but his and his brother's interest in the mechanics of it all was definitely fun.
Today was about literal reflection. As part of an online photography course entitled Picture Summer, I was challenged today to view my refreshing drink as being something more than just to parch thirst. Photographing liquid can go in many directions.
Below are some of my outtakes. This prompt really sparked a lot of ideas, and so while I posted a single shot for my classroom assignment, I wanted to share my other ideas with you:
The old "capture the drop, capture the ripples" effect is cliche,
but I thought it would be fun to use a different colored glass.

Of course clear-on-clear is also a fun look, especially against a silver surface.

This opaque glass shot was more about photographing what was inside, that lone drop
sliding down the side, and the geometry of the chair arm on which the drink rests.

This mirroring effect was something I played with quite a lot once I captured the above shot.
I had the boys stand outside to attempt to photograph them through the glass,
but it didn't quite work. Still, capturing my back yard deck in a wine glass was fun.

The ice-cube tray and the cubes inside the drink say "summer"
but the shadow makes it seem more sinister. Hmmm.
I had a lot of fun playing with my camera today. I enjoyed the freedom!
(I will definitely be signing up for Picture Fall this autumn! As a bonus, Picture Summer is open for registration until this Wednesday, July 7th - so if you are so inspired, jump in!)

Disclaimer: I paid the $30 for entry into Picture Summer myself and wasn't informed of the class for the purposes of a blog post or for review or anything of that nature. I just felt like taking a photography class and realized some of these outtakes would be fun to share with my readers. I provide the registration link and hint that Picture Fall will also be available just because it is a good tip for those interested!
