Daydreaming of Summer

Spring break just ended and already it seems like it was long ago. The end of school is sort-of in sight, although there are several things that will happen between now and then so I'm not completely ready for everything to snowball. After all, summer can be hard on parents.

But one thing I'm very much looking forward to this summer is BlogHer. It will be my sixth. Yes, my sixth. I was one of the folks at the "original" BlogHer Conference back in 2005. I'm sure y'all have heard about those days, and how the whole concept has changed (both in positive and negative ways.) While it was fabulous to have the intimacy we did in 2005, it is impossible to replicate given the extreme popularity of the event now. And with mini-gatherings, we don't see all the people that we hope to see. I understand the trade-off.

But I was definitely disappointed to find out that the CheeseBurgHer party was already full, for example. (If you are attending BlogHer and haven't signed up for parties, please check out The BlogHer Party Plan and get your RSVPs in!) I know that I shouldn't have any more "clout" than the next person, but to not get in on a "tradition" because I was (gasp!) working to meet several work deadlines instead of pasted to twitter makes me more than a bit disappointed.

Luckily there are several other parties - and I'm of course still very excited to experience the magic and camaraderie that is BlogHer. (Check out my sidebar for my badge-bling.) I hope that we can add a Central Park run to the mix, too. I did a silly thing and signed up for my third half-marathon; it will be the week before BlogHer, so I'll at least be "warmed up" to party down. (My fourth half-marathon will be in September, and my fifth will be in October - that will be terrific because just as summer break is tough, so is the whole back-to-school chaos. It will be nice to have some distractions forcing myself to remain physically active.)

As for what my kids will be doing this summer, it is still up in the air. At the start of 2010, there were many unanswered questions. Most of them have now been answered, unfortunately in the negative. For example, we are now #2 on the waitlist for our neighborhood swim club. Although that is good news for next year, since we're practically guaranteed to get in, it is bad news for this year because we nearly made it yet must wait another year. Similarly, some summer activities for the boys fell through. Many camps are already full, and then I'm hesitant to commit to other things because we're still waiting on things like Splig's gymnastics placement. Whether or not he "levels up" will determine the days and times of his practice; and that needs to take priority over other activities. It would be a shame to shell out hundreds of dollars for a non-refundable camp only to not attend because of gymnastics. I'm afraid much of the chicken-or-the-egg decisions have become rather scrambled.

A good chunk of the summer will be unscheduled, at least during the week. (On the weekends I have several runs scheduled to continue Project 2010k and to keep active.) The boys will definitely appreciate the freedom, I'm sure, but I know it will be tough at times when I'm trying to work and they'd rather pelt me with water balloons. Or, when I want to run and they'd rather veg.

But for now, I'll just daydream about partying in New York.

I'll go to McDonald's with you and we'll have a cheeseburger - OK? I'm looking forward to seeing you!

I'm on the waitlist too -- even thought AlphaMom JUST told me when I met her at Bossy's NY stop ... so I'll come with you and Mayberry to Mickey D's. We'll host "CheeseburgHer B."

How about if for the summer, you run while the boys try to pelt you with water balloons? Both problems solved! See, what re friends for. Lol...
